Complete Details: South Asia’s Largest Battery Energy Storage System at Kilokari, Delhi

Overview

Delhi has taken a major step towards sustainable and reliable energy by launching South Asia’s largest battery energy storage system at Kilokari, a densely populated region in South Delhi. This initiative aims to improve power supply, support renewable energy, and enhance grid stability in urban areas.

About the System

  • The project was inaugurated on May 30, 2025, by Delhi Power Minister Ashish Sood.
  • Installed at the BRPL substation, the system has a capacity of 20 MW (40 MWh).
  • It is India’s first commercially approved utility-scale energy storage system.

Important Fact:
Commercially approved” means the system is certified for official, full-scale use and connected to the main power grid.

Technology & Benefits

  • Uses Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries, which are:
    • Thermally stable
    • Safer and long-lasting
    • Suitable for Delhi’s extreme weather
  • Housed in temperature-controlled containers to ensure 24×7 performance in hot summers and cold winters.

Major Benefits to the City:

  • Reliable power supply during peak demand
  • Reduces network overloading
  • Helps in peak shaving (reducing electricity use during high demand times)
  • Lowers power purchase cost for the utility
  • Supports renewable energy integration
  • Directly benefits over 1 lakh residents

Project Collaboration

The project was implemented in one year with joint efforts from:

  • BRPL (BSES Rajdhani Power Limited)
  • IndiGrid
  • GEAPP (Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet)
  • Amperehour Energy

It was inaugurated in the presence of several key officials including:

  • South Delhi MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri
  • BSES Director & Group CEO Amal Sinha
  • BRPL CEO Abhishek Ranjan

Why Kilokari?

Kilokari is a densely populated area in South Delhi with high electricity demand.
The BESS system helps:

  • Maintain uninterrupted supply
  • Reduce power cuts
  • Stabilize the grid during peak hours (especially in summer)

Conclusion

This project sets a new benchmark for urban energy management in India. With the launch of South Asia’s largest BESS, Delhi is leading the way in integrating clean and reliable energy systems into its power infrastructure.
